Train a puppy in 2 easy steps - so easy

So you have just been out and seen the most incredibly beautiful - “yes I need you to look after me eyes” little puppy you have ever layed eyes on. It’s cute adorable and was definitely the one that stood out from all its brothers and sisters. Yep you buy it with all that hard earned cash you work for.

Flip : whilst driving it home you realise that you haven’t done any preparation for it whatsoever. This cardboard box will never do. Thinks - I know lets stop off at the local supermarket and buy it some food, the kids are quite happy sitting with it in the back of the car whilst you nip inside the shop (until you come back and find its been sick, and has wet all over the back of the car seat and the kids won’t stop crying.

Nevertheless, when in the shop we all know what you are thinking - Well that looks like a nice bed, well it does need one doesn’t it. Oh and that cute little squeaky toy, it is definitely going to need that too. What about some food, and whoops better buy a dish for it to eat the food out of. Oh yeh and maybe a new mop and cloth and sprayee thingy cleaning stuffy wipyee thingee for the floors.

On and on it goes - I know lets insure it and not forget the innoculations. Don’t you just love the way the expenses mount up. Not to mention the shoes, table legs, TV wires that get chewed and need replacing, as well as the socks and slippers that get carried out into the garden to be chewed up so lovingly. Still you love the little mite to bits.

OK so now its time to consider some important training lessons.

Isn’t it too young? - Its never too young to start learning.

So here are my 2 golden rules for training your puppy.

1. This has got to be the first – give clear and concise instructions.

In fact it is so important I have explained this on youtube see the attached video below.

I will say no more now, but instead, just let you decide yourself from watching the video.

2. The 2 “R”’s - Repetition & Reward.

You just know that after coming down stairs on the first night, not bearing to hear that crying and wailing from something so small and cute and being downstairs in the kitchen, after being so cruelly taken away from its brothers and sisters; that you are going to put the puppy back into its basket at least 264 times (its now 2:0 in the morning) saying “get to bed”, before you finally relent and end up going to sleep on the downstairs sofa with the puppy happily sleeping away straddled across your chest. But the repetition does pay off. You will only say “get to bed” 150 times the next night before giving in and and sleeping yet again on the sofa. Three weeks of sleeping on the sofa and the repetition is now paying off. You only have to get up in the morning to clear away the little poops that you inevitably stand in with your bare feet, because you can no longer wear the chewed slippers that have now been thrown in the bin .

The reward : The reward is - the puppy will give you its lifetime of unconditional love. You may have had a bad day, you may be in a bad mood with the rest of the world, your hair looks like its has just been torn out of an old haystack , but nevertheless your puppy still loves you just the same regardless.

But seriously always reward good behaviour with a treat. No matter that you daily throw treats on the floor for it to gobble up without as much as a “wow that was tasty”. Because fairs fair – your life will be one long treat knowing that you will always have the love adoration and affection from that little beauty that you all love so much.
